Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) is a by-product of iron and steel manufacturing processes. It is produced when iron ore, coke, and limestone are heated in a blast furnace, and the resulting molten slag is rapidly chilled with water to form a granulated material.
GGBS is a fine powder that can be used as a partial replacement for Portland cement in concrete production. When GGBS is added to concrete, it reacts with the calcium hydroxide in the cement to form additional calcium silicate hydrates, which results in denser, stronger, and more durable concrete. GGBS also reduces the amount of heat generated during concrete curing and provides better resistance to sulfate and chloride attack.
GGBS is an eco-friendly product as it reduces the amount of carbon dioxide emissions associated with the production of Portland cement. It is commonly used in large construction projects such as bridges, dams, and high-rise buildings, as well as in smaller projects such as driveways and patios.
